Erdogan criticises UN, calls for reform Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the UN has become unable to fulfil its duty of preserving peace and called for reform of the Security Council, in remarks delivered to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. He criticised the UN's response to what he called "a genocidal mindset that can never get enough of killing", adding that "no one with a sense of humanity, mercy, or compassion, no one guided by justice and conscious[ness] can possibly remain indifferent to this picture". "This picture must be a shocking one for all of us and what it tells us is clear: The United Nations established 81 years ago to maintain international peace and security is no longer able to fulfill this mission, or more precisely it has been rendered unable to do so." "Those in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan and other crises who have tied their hopes to the UN are deeply disappointed," he added. His speech was met with applause, including by the Palestinian officials in attendance; meanwhile, the Israeli delegation walked out. Erdogan calls Gaza 'the most inhuman and shameful concentration camp of our time' Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed concern over the absence of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who was unable to travel to New York for the UN assembly because the US rejected his visa application. “This injustice against our Palestinian brothers and sisters deeply offends the conscience of humanity,” Erdogan told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. Erdogan also condemned the situation in Gaza, saying "nobody with a conscience can close their eyes" to what was happening there. “The people of Gaza are still searching for their loved ones under the rubble,” Erdogan said, after three years of what he called Israeli "state terror". He added that Gaza has become “the most inhuman and shameful concentration camp of our time”, calling it "the world’s largest graveyard for children" and "the place with the highest rate of child amputations in the world".
