Green Party members to vote on declaring Zionism a form of racism at conference
Green Party members to vote on declaring Zionism a form of racism at conference Submitted by Imran Mulla on Fri, 10/02/2026 - 16:05 If the motion passes, the Greens will become the first major party in Britain to recognise Zionism as a form of racism Leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, takes part in a march against far-right extremism, organised by the Together Alliance, in London on 28 March 2026 (Reuters/Hannah McKay) Off The Green Party’s annual conference has begun in the seaside town of Brighton, just two days after the ruling Labour Party’s conference ended. Party members are gearing up to vote on an unprecedented motion to declare Zionism a form of racism. The vote is expected to take place on Sunday, according to party insiders. If the motion passes, it will become official policy and the Greens will become the first major party in the country to recognise Zionism as racism. A party organiser involved in promoting the motion told Middle East Eye she believed it was highly likely to pass, saying it has significant support among the membership. The motion has been endorsed by prominent Holocaust survivor and activist Stephen Kapos, who said: “I am in full agreement with the motion being proposed and, as a child survivor of World War Two Holocaust and a Jew, [I] believe that Zionism both as an ideology and practice is harmful and has no legitimacy and must be rejected.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); British-Palestinian Lubna Speitan, the lead author of the motion, said: “We must directly confront the ideology that normalises our suffering, the racism of Zionism and its narrative, which inverts victim and oppressor.  “Palestinians and their allies – Muslim, Christian, Jewish and those without faith alike – drafted the motion 'Zionism is Racism', to be debated and voted on at the Green Party Conference and to be shared with other organisations, trade unions and political parties.” But the motion, which calls for a single democratic Palestinian state with equal rights for ethnic and religious groups, is drawing heavy criticism from within the party itself. "Keir Starmer is only going to get more unpopular by the next election." In this interview, Zack Polanski, Green Party leader hopeful, tells MEE how he aims to revolutionise British politics with a left-wing populism that can challenge Nigel Farage's Reform pic.twitter.com/WUoQrZiRg6 — Middle East Eye (@MiddleEastEye) May 27, 2025 Two former Green leaders denounced the motion on Friday, with Caroline Lucas - who was for years the party’s only MP - labelling it divisive, saying: “I do have serious concerns about this motion. "There is no single definition of Zionism, and irrespective of the intentions of the people who put that motion forward, I think there is a real risk that it’ll be divisive and could be seen as a sign that Jewish people aren’t welcome in the party.” Meanwhile former Green co-leader Adrian Ramsay said: “It would just be wrong to adopt a policy that could be seen as not supporting the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to statehood.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); He added: “I stand by the position the Green Party had in the 2024 manifesto, on which I was elected, which made clear we want to see equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.” Amendments to the motion Green leader Zack Polanski, who is Jewish himself, said last month the motion needs to be amended to say “very clearly and explicitly that this motion safeguards Jewish people. "And what it means by that is if someone stands against the occupation, stands against apartheid, stands against the genocide, but happens to be a member of a synagogue that calls itself a Zionist synagogue, they should not be treated any differently within the Green Party.” Exclusive: Zack Polanski says UK should defy Israel on fate of British Consulate in East Jerusalem Read More » Polanski added: “Second, there’s a line in it that talks about a single Palestinian state. I think there’s something quite imperial about this for the British Government, or indeed the Green Party of England and Wales, to decide what the future settlement of Palestine and Israel looks like.  “I think my job as leader of the Green Party, the Green Party’s job, is to maintain justice and equality both for Palestinians and Israelis.” MEE understands that members are expected to vote on amendments to the motion on Sunday. The motion itself reads: “Zionism is a political ideology which called for the creation – and, now it exists, the continuity – of an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/ or domination of the non-Jewish population.  “The real, material manifestation of Zionism has been the historic and ongoing dehumanisation, displacement, dispossession, disenfranchisement and destruction of Palestinians.” It adds: “This motion is aimed at the political ideology and practice of Zionism, as defined, and not at the religious or ethnic background of those who may identify as Zionists. Not all Jews are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jews.” A booklet published by the motion’s authors and distributed at the conference advocates for a “single democratic State in the whole of Palestine, for Muslims, Jews, Christians and people of no faith. "This was the situation in 1947, when the Arab States, the Palestinians and the Latin American States put forward a UN Resolution asking exactly that and opposing the partition of Palestine.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The booklet adds: “Would an ethnonationalist State for a different ethnicity to the exclusion of another anywhere else be acceptable? Would calling for Britain to be for Whites only, or for Christians only, ever be acceptable within any respectable antiracist space?” Explaining his views further last week, Polanski said: “I think the problem with definitions is they mean different things to different people. If you’re defining Zionism as the displacement and genocide of the Palestinians, which is how in practice Zionism has become in truth, then that is racist.” In his speech to the conference on Friday afternoon, Polanski focused on the cost of living and putting pressure on Prime Minister Andy Burnham on housing. He urged the Labour government to “put in place a three-year emergency brake on private rents”. Labour has so far ruled out rent controls. He declared: “Vote Green and watch Labour move,” arguing the Greens have forced Labour to the left on key political issues, including on Israel. Polanski is the party’s parliamentary candidate in a by-election in London’s Holborn and St Pancras in less than a week on 8 October. Death, displacement and disease: A young Gaza doctor on life under Israeli bombardment
Death, displacement and disease: A young Gaza doctor on life under Israeli bombardment Submitted by Faisal Edroos on Fri, 10/02/2026 - 12:10 Maryam Youssef tells The Gaza Podcast why she volunteered at the Nasser Hospital, what it was like contracting chickenpox as bombs rained down around her and her struggle to process the trauma of war Off A young Palestinian doctor who survived Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has described what it was like confronting the burden of patient care almost immediately after graduating. In the first episode of Middle East Eye's The Gaza Podcast, which was recorded inside the besieged enclave, Maryam Youssef described the horrors she experienced while volunteering - and living - at Nasser Hospital. She recalls contracting chickenpox and being forced to isolate in a room for days as bombs rained down around her, and how she has struggled to process the trauma of surviving the conflict. "I had chickenpox after two days [of starting work at the hospital]," Youssef told podcast host Hussam Tannera. Asked how she continued working while infected, she said: "I basically locked myself in my room and I stayed there for four to five days." (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); "The first two days no one knew. On the third day, I think that's when people that I work with began to notice and they give me some meds." Youssef said she began volunteering at Nasser Hospital shortly after her family was displaced for a second time, leaving her with nowhere else to go. Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, like many other hospitals in the enclave, had been repeatedly targeted, besieged and raided by Israeli forces - most notably during a major siege in early 2024 and a deadly double-tap air strike in August 2025. 'I think I was hungry most of the time, just as everyone else was' - Maryam Youssef, doctor Thousands of Palestinians had sought shelter at the hospital after repeated Israeli evacuation orders, leaving them trapped in a constant state of fear and uncertainty, unsure where they could go next or whether anywhere would be safe. "I think I was hungry most of the time, just as everyone else was," Youssef said, when describing the period when Israel completely withheld food from entering Gaza. "I was drained because even before this, I was staying in the hospital most of the time." Even after a so-called ceasefire went into effect in October 2025, more than 1.7 million Palestinians remain internally displaced, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Most are living in overcrowded conditions with inadequate shelter, water and sanitation, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. The UN body OCHA has reported that, as a result, 94 percent of the population are in urgent need of shelter and basic household assistance. 'Keeping myself busy' The conditions Youssef described are part of a wider health crisis that has persisted since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025. Last week, the WHO reported that only 19 of Gaza's 36 hospitals were even partially functioning, with none fully operational. Essential medicines, diagnostics, medical equipment and fuel all remain in critically short supply. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); "Because of the blockade, we have had to re-use single-use items," Youssef lamented. 'They suddenly withdraw': Gaza siblings pulled from rubble left reeling after mother’s death Read More » "You have to hold scissors at a certain angle if you want them to cut. That's not the best way to treat patients, but because of our situation we have to think about what not only is best, but also what do we have." According to Palestinian authorities, at least 1,402 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 5,000 injured since the ceasefire took hold. Youssef said that during the height of the war she was struggling to process her grief after her uncle and his entire family were killed - only learning of their deaths through a Telegram news channel. "I called my mother and my mom didn't answer - and then my sister told me yes, that's all [the information] I got," she said. Youssef said her response was to immerse herself in treating wounded Palestinians. "I went down to the ED [emergency department]. There were multiple casualties downstairs, and that's how I kept myself busy." Survival mode During the podcast, Youssef said she refused to tell her mother about contracting chickenpox until recently because she was still grieving the loss of her brother. "I didn't feel okay to tell her this because she herself had lost her brother too, and she was worried," she said. She described living through the war as entering a "survival mode" in which she had not yet fully processed what had happened. "I don't think I have processed it," she said. "I'm in the, I'm processing right now." (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); "When you're in that mode, you're in survival mode, and I think I just recently unlocked this mode, because this is a very big burden, and I didn't feel like I am ready to face it yet." Her account reflects the wider psychological toll of prolonged war and displacement in Gaza. The WHO has previously estimated that about one million people in Gaza are in need of mental health and psychological support. For Youssef, processing the experience has not meant leaving it behind. Now completing her internship at a primary healthcare clinic in Gaza, she said the international community still fails to understand what life is like after the ceasefire. "Most people believe that life is going on and we have moved on," she said. Instead, she said: "The war reshaped itself." "It's not constant bombing all the time, and it's not like before when 100 people are dying every day... but it's still happening, it's a constant rhythm." Slow road to reconstruction Her comments come as the gulf between the conditions on the ground and the Board of Peace's plans for the enclave continue to widen. The US-backed body unveiled a plan last week in which Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, acknowledged that progress had been slower than hoped. The Board said some $18bn had been committed to rebuild the enclave, but only $280m had actually been called, highlighting the gap between pledges and the money available for projects. It estimates that full recovery and reconstruction could cost about $71.4bn over the next decade. 'I make a lot of jokes about it [what life was like at the hospital]. I think this is my way of processing it, like dark humour. It's a defence mechanism' - Maryam Youssef, doctor Nickolay Mladenov, the Board's director-general, also acknowledged major political obstacles to implementing plans for the enclave. "Discussions with Israel right now are not easy because of the elections there. Everything is a little bit more emotional, a little bit more politically sensitive," he said. He also made clear that there was no fixed timeline for the plan. "We are not bound by a calendar - we're bound by verification," he said. For doctors such as Youssef, the consequences of the war extend far beyond the immediate demands of treating patients. She said she was only now beginning to process what she had experienced, with humour becoming one of the ways she coped with the trauma. "I make a lot of jokes about it [what life was like at the hospital]. I think this is my way of processing it, like dark humour. It's a defence mechanism." A grim winter ahead? EU states asked to prepare gas and electricity savings
Alarm bells are ringing about fuel prices across the EU. The average cost of diesel per litre is well above €2, whereas in October of last year it was around €1.50. Even before this latest spike, the cost of living was already biting, and it seems that the conflict in the Middle East is not going to give Europeans much respite as the winter draws closer. We review what EU member states have done to cushion the blow of rising energy prices for ordinary people, and whether those measures have been effective.
