Rubio says US still confident its bases are secure after UK incident
Rubio says US still confident its bases are secure after UK incident US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that Washington still has confidence in the security of all of its bases, after five men were arrested near a British air base that hosts American bombers on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Rubio, asked about the US decision to remove its B-1 bombers from the British base, said the defence department constantly reallocates resources where they need to be and that he would not directly tie last week's incident to the move. "It's not unusual to see rotations happen," Rubio said. He added that British authorities had been very cooperative on the case.  Reporter: Why did American bombers leave RAF Fairford?Marco Rubio: It's not unusual to see rotations happening and movement of assets. pic.twitter.com/cNeDw9ZlKM— Conflict Radar (@Conflict_Radar) October 5, 2026

Labour MP Emily Thornberry urges UK to defy Israeli order to close Jerusalem consulate
Labour MP Emily Thornberry urges UK to defy Israeli order to close Jerusalem consulate Emily Thornberry, chair of parliament’s influential Foreign Affairs Committee, has called on Britain to refuse compliance with Israel’s closure of the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem. Her intervention comes amidst mounting anxiety among Palestinians that Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband will submit to Israeli pressure and shut the consulate on Thursday. Middle East Eye understands that the foreign secretary’s decision is being watched closely by other consulates, including France and Spain, who fear they will be next to be forced out if the British quit. Thornberry told MEE on Monday that the closure of the consulate was a “blatant retaliation against Britain for standing up for international law. The closure order is in itself illegal.” “I hope that Israel will not go through with the closure of a consulate which has served Britons and Palestinians since 1838. Britain should not allow Israel to do this,” she said. Read more: Labour MP Emily Thornberry urges UK to defy Israeli order to close Jerusalem consulate

The words I learned in the Kingdom
RIYADH: “It’s strange, the world is like a caravan,” Mohammed said to me. “Whether you are ready to move forward or not, the caravan will.” The stoicism and calm with which he accepted the sometimes harsh realities of life was new to me at the time, coming from a more idealistic, and at times naive, way of thinking. The mindset and philosophy that Mohammed lived by became one of the qualities I admired the most in many of the Saudi people I met over the years. He called it as he saw it, told me
