Security guard in Palestine Action case tells court he ‘felt like Indiana Jones’
Security guard in Palestine Action case tells court he ‘felt like Indiana Jones’ Submitted by Katherine Hearst on Fri, 10/09/2026 - 15:01 Five defendants are facing charges in connection with a break-in at an Elbit Systems arms factory near Bristol in 2024 Protesters outside Woolwich Crown Court in London, where alleged Palestine Action activists are on trial, 17 November 2025 (AFP) Off Jurors in a Palestine Action trial heard on Friday that a security guard felt like “Indiana Jones” when he was confronting a group of activists involved in a raid on an Israeli-owned arms manufacturer. Five defendants - Qesser Zuhrah, 21, Zahra Farooque, 26, Kamran Ahmed, 29, Heba Muraisi, 31, and Liam Mullany, 34 - are facing charges of criminal damage and violent disorder at Woolwich Crown Court in connection with a break-in at an Elbit Systems factory near Bristol on 6 August 2024. Prosecutors allege that the defendants, whom they refer to as the “black team”, wore black jumpsuits and aimed to “overwhelm” security to allow a second group of activists, named the “red team”, to break into the factory in a prison van, ram the shutters and smash weapons and other equipment. They say that the defendants achieved this by “threatening, intimidating and, if necessary, assaulting the guards, by throwing fireworks at them and brandishing weapons such as whips and hammers and large kebab skewers. All five defendants deny the charges. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Giving evidence on Friday, security guard Angelo Volante recalled that he “took control” of a lump hammer held by one of the team members, using a whip that “tangled around” the tool. When cross-examined by Garry Green KC, who represents Zuhrah, Volante said it was a “slightly amusing experience”. “I don’t own a fedora [hat] but I felt a bit like Indiana Jones,” he told the court, adding that he “couldn’t believe it had happened”. Green described his account as a “fantasy”, asking the security guard if he was aware that the whip “was actually purchased from a sex shop”. When asked by Green if “he enjoyed” the events of 6 August, Volante said: “In that kind of scenario what one aspires to do is to have cheerfulness in the face of adversity.” Green observed that Volante had trained in martial arts in the past, asking him: “Was this a bit of a combat game for you?” Volante responded that he was “making the best of what I had in front of me”. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Explosions and smoke When cross-examined by the prosecutor Deanna Heer KC, Volante told the court he had received a call on his radio, prompting him to run to the rear yard. When he turned the corner of the building, he said he “could hear explosions” and smoke emitted from fireworks. He recalled that the group of around a dozen people “began moving towards” him and his colleague, Nigel Shaw. He said that as they drew closer he observed they were carrying “different objects”, including whips, crowbars and “at least one” hammer. Volante described the sight as being “pretty threatening”.  When Green asked why he didn’t “back off, run and go and report to others”, Volante said he was “maintaining our position, which was defensive, we withdrew over time, based on pressing of group”. 'A very frightening time': US terror tag endangers UK Palestine Action activists, critics say Read More » He then said a single member of the group “broke away and moved forward on his own” before Shaw struck the individual around the legs with an umbrella and tackled them to the ground. Citing a statement given by Volante the day after the incident, Green reminded him that he had described the activists as “approaching as a group”, and that when they had come “within contact distance”, Shaw “managed to tackle an individual to the ground”. Prosecutors allege that when Shaw detained the individual, “other members of the group attacked him, hitting him until he released their colleague, leaving the security guard with a laceration to his head”. Referring to Volante’s statement again, Green quoted him as saying, “I believed my colleague [Shaw] was hit on the head at least once by the individuals in black” while he was on the ground. Volante responded that he “was pretty confident I saw blows to the head, and blows to the rest of the body as well”. Green said, that according to his statement, Volante said Shaw had told him “he believes he was hit multiple times”, suggesting that “the evidence you’re giving to this jury is based on what Mr Shaw has told you”. “I saw him get hit at least once,” Volante responded, adding: “I believe my belief is solid.” Green then suggested to Volante: “You’re doing your best aren’t you to try and make this appear a great deal worse than what it actually is?” Volante responded: “I don’t agree at all.” Palestine Action News Post Date Override 0 Update Date Mon, 05/04/2020 - 21:19 Update Date Override 0

Support for Israeli far right surges among first-time voters, poll finds
Support for Israeli far right surges among first-time voters, poll finds Submitted by Nadav Rapaport on Fri, 10/09/2026 - 15:27 Ben Gvir and Smotrich’s parties projected to win 16 percent of first-time voters, outpolling Netanyahu’s Likud Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, surrounded by Israeli policemen, waves to right-wing activists gathering outside the Damascus Gate of the walled Old City of Jerusalem on 26 May 2025 (Ahmad Gharabli/AFP) Off Israel’s far-right parties are among the most popular choices for first-time voters ahead of this month’s elections, according to a new poll reported by Israeli news outlet Ynet on Friday. The poll, conducted among a representative sample of 543 Israeli voters aged 18 to 22, found that National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party would win 8.88 percent of the vote, translating to 15 Knesset seats. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s Religious Zionist alliance would receive 8.09 percent, or 14 seats. Together, the two far-right parties would secure 29 Knesset seats based on voting intentions among first-time voters, according to the poll. They outperformed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, which received 7.95 percent of the vote, equivalent to 14 seats. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Otzma Yehudit narrowly trailed former prime minister Naftali Bennett’s Together alliance, which received 8.98 percent, or 16 seats. Gadi Eisenkot, a leading challenger to Netanyahu, was also close behind Ben Gvir. His Yashar party received 8.75 percent, translating to 15 seats.  The Zionist Democrats alliance, the successor to the Labor Party that dominated Israeli politics during the country's first three decades, polled at 4.99 percent, equivalent to nine seats. The Joint List, an alliance backed predominantly by Palestinian citizens of Israel, received similar support, with 5.23 percent, also translating to nine seats. In the 2022 elections, Smotrich and Ben Gvir’s parties won a combined 14 seats, helping pave the way for what has been described as the most right-wing government in Israel’s history. Far right gains ground among young voters The poll suggests growing support for far-right parties among young Israelis ahead of the 27 October elections. Israel’s Central Elections Committee estimates that around 500,000 new voters will be eligible to cast ballots in the upcoming vote. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Just six years ago, in the 2020 elections, Otzma Yehudit secured only 0.42 percent of the vote, failing to cross the electoral threshold required to enter parliament. Now, Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit, Smotrich’s Religious Zionist alliance and a new far-right party led by former army general Ofer Winter, Amcha Yisrael, are together projected to win more than 19 percent of first-time voters’ support, according to Ynet’s poll. Winter’s party, however, remains below the electoral threshold. The parties are also polling strongly among the wider electorate. A survey published on Friday by the right-wing newspaper Ma’ariv projected that the three parties would win a combined 18 Knesset seats.  More broadly, 54 percent of first-time Jewish voters expressed support for the outgoing government’s policies, according to the poll.  Ynet’s interviews with young voters offered a glimpse into the appeal of the far right, particularly its policies on settlements, Palestinian prisoners and territorial expansion. Blaming the Israeli 'far right' lets a genocidal society off the hook Read More » One young Israeli settler told the outlet that Smotrich had helped establish numerous farms and hilltop outposts in the occupied West Bank. “Thanks to Smotrich, suddenly lots of farms and hilltop outposts” had been established, the settler said. He also expressed frustration that Israel had not yet established settlements in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. “This is the biblical inheritance of our forefathers,” he said, referring to the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. “This is a place that belongs to me historically and divinely,” he added. Another young voter told the Israeli outlet that he is considering voting for Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit, saying the far-right leader had done "important things, like worsening the conditions of the terrorists in prison and the death penalty". He was referring to Ben Gvir’s signature policy in Israel’s detention facilities, which human rights organisations have described as torture camps, as dozens of Palestinian inmates have died in them due to inhumane conditions in the past three years. He was also referring to an Israeli law sponsored by Ben Gvir, under which only Palestinians convicted of deadly assaults will be executed. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A potential voter for the Zionist Democrats alliance offered a more critical assessment of the government’s policies. “Sometimes wars are necessary, but there is unprecedented violence,” the voter told Ynet, arguing that the violence was not leading towards “a long-term political solution”. “We keep losing our international legitimacy,” the voter added, expressing concern over Israel’s declining standing abroad amid its war on Gaza and escalating violence and displacement in the occupied West Bank.
