Iran warns ‘dark months’ await US economy after renewed attacks
Iran warns ‘dark months’ await US economy after renewed attacks Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref says Washington has transformed Tehran’s security and defence calculations, warning that Iran will deliver an “asymmetrical” and “multi-layered” response. “The Americans should start thinking about stockpiling gasoline and fuel. Dark months await the American economy,” Aref wrote on X. His warning followed US President Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday that Washington could attack Iran “at any time”, although he did not expect the renewed fighting to continue for “too long”. Trump also said the US had “almost total control” of the Strait of Hormuz.

Israeli settlers 'hike' through my West Bank village. Next is the violent land grab
Israeli settlers 'hike' through my West Bank village. Next is the violent land grab For decades, my hometown of Qira was a sanctuary of quiet endurance. One of the smallest villages in the occupied West Bank, nestled in the Salfit governorate and tucked away from covetous eyes, it remained relatively shielded from major land confiscations and aggressive incursions throughout the long years of occupation. That protective obscurity is ending. In recent weeks, organised groups of armed Israeli settlers have begun making regular, unauthorised "exploratory hikes" through our village, wandering past our homes, inspecting our ancient Roman water pool and descending into the valley to survey local shrines, assigning them Hebrew names and claiming biblical connections. What may appear to an outside observer as harmless recreational outings is, in fact, a precursor to territorial expansion - a scouting campaign signalling that no Palestinian space is safe. The settlers themselves have said as much: "Wherever the hiker's foot treads," the founder of one hiking group has declared, "there the border will pass." We need look no further than the village of Tell, near Nablus, to see where this trajectory leads. In July, four Palestinians were killed there after a confrontation sparked by one such armed settler "hike", and rampaging settlers then burned homes in nearby villages. Spain's Sanchez says no 'solid proof' that Morocco planned Ceuta crisis
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has told lawmakers that there is no evidence the Ceuta migrant crisis was orchestrated by Morocco's government. His remarks come a day after tens of thousands of people took part in protests across the country to criticize his handling of the migrant influx. He acknowledged that Ceuta was both a humanitarian crisis and an administrative challenge. But he rejected the findings of a police report that seemed to lay blame on Morocco. FRANCE 24's Sarah Morris reports from Madrid, Spain.

Ceuta crisis: ‘No evidence Morocco behind border surge’
There is no evidence Morocco was behind the mass influx of migrants that overwhelmed the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in July, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez told lawmakers Thursday. Sanchez's comments followed a police report that emerged this week saying that the mass entry into Ceuta was not a spontaneous migration event but a planned and phased operation designed to overwhelm border controls.

The wars in Ukraine and Iran are becoming dangerously enmeshed | Christopher S Chivvis
As the Trump administration refuses to end its war in Iran, it is steering into the storm, not out of itRussia hasn’t yet killed large numbers of Europeans outside Ukraine, but it’s getting closer. The night of 4-5 August, an airport bus driver discovered an armed drone lying near the tarmac of the Leipzig-Halle airport, which is a central hub of Europe’s logistical support to Ukraine’s war effort. A cargo jet, meanwhile, may have struck a second drone shortly after takeoff, forcing an abrupt landing, and investigators found a third drone laden with military explosives nearby. In 2024, incendiary devices hidden in parcels ignited in DHL cargo at the same airport. Had these detonated in the air, a major air catastrophe and large-scale civilian casualties would have ensued, probably resulting in a broader war. Continue reading...
