Over 130 lawyers warn UK sanctions on Israeli settlements don't go far enough
Over 130 lawyers warn UK sanctions on Israeli settlements don't go far enough Submitted by Oscar Rickett on Tue, 09/15/2026 - 11:54 UK action on Israeli settlements falls far short, lawyers and former judges tell Prime Minister Andy Burnham in letter A flag flies at the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, 9 September 2026 (Ammar Awad/Reuters) Off More than 130 lawyers, former judges and legal academics have warned British Prime Minister Andy Burnham that sanctions announced last week by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband against Israeli settlements fail to meet the UK’s obligations under international law. In a six-page letter sent to Burnham on Tuesday, the lawyers welcome the government’s decision to act alongside Canada and France, but state that “the action covered in the recent announcement falls far short” of Britain’s obligations to oppose Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory under a 2024 International Court of Justice ruling. As part of last week’s announcement, the UK declared that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory was illegal. Miliband told parliament that he agrees ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is taking place in the West Bank. Government sources confirmed to MEE that Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights and in East Jerusalem will be also covered by the UK's new measures, as well as those in the occupied West Bank. Eleven other countries - Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden - joined the UK in supporting or considering sanctions on trade in goods with settlements. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Signatories to the letter warning Burnham that these measures “fall far short” of Britain’s obligations include barrister Michael Mansfield, former lord justice of appeal Alan Moses, SOAS professor Nimer Sultany and Ralph Wilde, UCL professor of international law. Limited actions The letter calls for measures including extending the British sanctions to cover insurance, accountancy services and digital infrastructure. The lawyers state that the government should confirm publicly that no UK public body, pension scheme or sovereign fund holds investments in settlements. They also call for the imposition of a full arms embargo on Israel.  'The elephant in the room is that the occupation is not a bug, it’s a feature' - Nimer Sultany, SOAS professor “The government’s decision to finally acknowledge that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Gaza Strip and West Bank is illegal is welcome," Wilde said. “But the consequences of this illegality for the UK and other states - special legal duties to take comprehensive action to bring this and other illegal actions by Israel, including its genocide in Gaza, to an end - are far more wide-ranging than the important but limited actions against settlements and settlers announced.” “The elephant in the room is that the occupation is not a bug, it’s a feature,” SOAS professor of law Nimer Sultany said.  “Israel’s political consensus opposes Palestinian statehood. Thus, ending Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, as determined by the International Court of Justice, requires immediate, effective and comprehensive actions by the UK government, not a piecemeal approach.” The lawyers’ letter refers to article 6(3) of the Arms Trade Treaty, which prohibits transfers where a state knows the items would be used as part of a genocide, in crimes against humanity or grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions. UK charity faces regulatory warning after Israeli settlement property protest Read More » “Having made that finding, the UK Government cannot treat that knowledge as absent,” the letter says. The lawyers go on to contrast the announced measures against Israel with Britain’s sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. These extended to Russian banks, energy companies, shipping networks, exports, investment activity and financial services, on the basis that those structures enable and finance the occupation.  The same logic has yet to be applied towards Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, the letter says. The lawyers also call on British government to ensure money raised by UK-registered charities is not used to support settlement activities.  Labour MP Melanie Ward said in June that Israeli settlements had received at least £28m in donations from 32 charities in England and Wales. The Charity Commission announced in August a fact-finding inquiry into charities working in settlements. Netanyahu 'offers Israeli services' in 'comprehensive war' against Houthis, says report
Netanyahu 'offers Israeli services' in 'comprehensive war' against Houthis, says report Submitted by MEE staff on Tue, 09/15/2026 - 09:31 Al-Akhbar cites US diplomatic sources on Netanyahu’s offer as Israeli media report naval readiness and Saudi requests for Israeli assistance Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham in Washington, 28 July 2026 (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images via AFP) Off Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered "Israel’s services" to countries in the Arabian Peninsula and has expressed a willingness to participate in a “comprehensive war” against Ansar Allah, the Houthi movement in Yemen, Lebanese media have reported. The report, by Al-Akhbar editor Ibrahim al-Amin, said that Netanyahu was pressing Israel’s security establishment and military to prepare for possible action against Iran and Hezbollah. The proposed Israeli role was part of a "wider regional effort" to counter the Houthis and the threat to shipping through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb, one of the world’s main maritime corridors, Israeli media said. The Houthi capture of Mocha and the group’s expanding position along Yemen’s western coast are a "growing Israeli concern", a separate Al-Akhbar report said.  Israeli assessments feared control of the coast and Bab al-Mandeb could add pressure on shipping and strain the US-led maritime protection, the report said. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Israeli intelligence agencies were closely monitoring Ansar Allah’s movements, fearing that control of Mocha could increase the group’s ability to influence tankers and ships entering the Red Sea, it added.  The newspaper also cited Israeli assessments that the Houthi advance “may require intensifying Israeli naval activity in the vicinity of Bab al-Mandeb.” What would Houthi control of Bab al-Mandeb mean for the region? Read More » The capture of Mocha has strengthened the Houthi position around the vital sea passage that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.  The Institute for National Security Studies researcher, Yoel Guzansky, said simultaneous pressure on Saudi Arabia from Iran, the Houthis and militia groups in Iraq could open the way for “calm Israeli-Saudi security cooperation” involving intelligence, early warning and defence against missiles and drones, the report added.  Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had sought assistance from regional countries and had made an indirect request to Israel through US Central Command.   Riyadh had asked for help to stop the Houthis from blocking Bab al-Mandeb, it said. The report said Israel was unlikely to rush into an active military role because of concern that the Houthis could resume missile and drone attacks against Israel.  Israeli media reported that the crisis could provide an opportunity for closer Saudi-Israeli security ties. Yemen’s battlefield On the ground, the situation has moved rapidly beyond the initial Houthi seizure of Mocha. Houthi forces had reached the strategic port after taking Hays and Al-Khawkhah districts and advancing through western Yemen.  The Houthis have since announced the capture of Mayyun Island in Bab al-Mandeb, while government forces said they were carrying out air strikes against Houthi positions.  UK considers military support for Saudis against Houthis, report says Read More » The renewed fighting has displaced nearly 86,000 people, the International Organization for Migration said on Sunday, after the figure rose by about 10,000 in a single day, with more than 2,000 reaching Djibouti by sea. The fighting, which has killed more than 500 fighters, has also spread into Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, the Houthis claimed that they had launched a ballistic missile and drone attack on a Saudi military base. Ansar Allah military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the attack targeted the Sharurah base in southern Saudi Arabia, including “weapons depots and command and control centres that are managing the aggression against our nation and people”. He said the strikes hit their targets and warned of bigger strikes deeper inside Saudi Arabia if attacks on Yemen continue. The Yemeni military said its air force had conducted three strikes against Houthi positions and barracks in the Taiz region.  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Al Jazeera described the Houthi advance as more than a temporary battlefield gain. Control of the Red Sea coast and nearby islands gives the group more ability to disrupt shipping, while exposing the weakness and divisions within Yemen’s internationally recognised government, it said. As the human toll of the war continues to rise, commercial traffic through Bab al-Mandeb has dropped to about 26 vessels per day from an average of about 70 before the Red Sea crisis. Amid France’s political 'fragmentation', 'a case needs to be made for participatory democracy’
Carys Garland is pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Smith, Historian of Modern France and Lecturer in Liberal Arts at Queen Mary University of London. He argues that Marine Le Pen and the National Rally’s commanding position in early presidential polling should not be regarded as an inevitable far-right victory. They are benefiting from familiarity, unity and laser-focused messaging. More fundamentally, however, Smith sees the polling as a reflection of a French electorate shaped by anger, anxiety, economic insecurity and political fatigue. Rather than describing this landscape simply as one of growing “polarization,” he proposes the more revealing concept of “fragmentation.”

Corruption ‘endemic’ in Trump administration: 'Checks and balances only in effect at lower courts'
