Protest rallies held in Syria against repeated Israeli incursions, attacks
Protest rallies held in Syria against repeated Israeli incursions, attacks Protest rallies were held across Syria on Friday against repeated Israeli incursions in the country's south including one this week that killed a man with a disability. The Israeli military has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria and conducted frequent incursions into its territory since the new government took power after toppling longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. It also sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that had separated Israeli and Syrian forces on the mainly Israeli-occupied Golan Heights since 1974. Protesters rallied in Damascus and central Syria's Homs, decrying Israeli incursions and attacks in the southern Quneitra and Daraa provinces, state media reported. Israeli troops have bulldozed olive groves, set up checkpoints and detained residents. An AFP correspondent in Daraa city saw hundreds rallying, some waving Syrian flags. Protester Taysir al-Hariri told AFP that demonstrators had gathered to "send a message to the world" that Syria stands united "against Israeli incursions and against anyone who is tempted to tamper... with national security". State television footage of other rallies showed protesters carrying posters reading "We are all Moaz", referring to the man with special needs who Syria said was killed by Israeli fire a day earlier during an incursion in Daraa province. In Damascus, outside a United Nations building, the family of a Syrian man seized by Israel called for his release, with children holding posters reading "I want my dad". State media on Friday also reported that Israeli forces advanced in part of Quneitra province and blocked several roads. Israel has vowed to keep troops in a so-called "security zone" in southern Syria, where it seeks a broader demilitarised area. Report by AFP   Syrians hold portraits of people who were arrested during Israeli military incursions in southern Syria, as they protest near the United Nations building in Damascus, on 23 October 2026. October sees highest number of ship attacks on record, report says
October sees highest number of ship attacks on record, report says October has been the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waterways, according to data compiled by a Washington-based think tank that has tracked maritime security incidents worldwide since 2017. "October has seen the highest number of ship attacks on record," said Noam Raydan, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Raydan, who maintains the institute's interactive shipping incident map, has recorded 28 confirmed and reported attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waterways in October and 113 since the US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28. The institute's map shows most of the attacks that took place in September and October were in the Strait of Hormuz. The tally broadly aligns with data from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which recorded a total of 120 incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Middle East since the conflict with Iran began. The IMO lists more than 30 supertankers, or Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), that were damaged during the attacks, including 11 in October alone, a Reuters review of the IMO list and MarineTraffic vessel data showed. Each VLCC can carry about 2 million barrels of crude. The listed vessels account for about 3.5% of the total global VLCC fleet, which exceeds 900. More tankers came under attack as shipowners became increasingly willing to load cargoes inside the Gulf, lured by daily freight rates exceeding $1 million and steeper discounts offered by regional producers against dated Brent. Between 5 October and 11 October, a dozen ships were attacked, marking also the highest weekly number of attacks since the conflict began, it also said. UKMTO, the British maritime security service, which recorded 135 incidents related to the US-Iran conflict as of 16 October, said it was struggling to capture the whole picture due to insufficient voluntary reporting by shippers. Report by Reuters
